Learning to Ski with a DVD

An interesting proposition.

Can these videos replace ski lessons? We’d love to say “absolutely!” and sell a million of them, but we won’t.

And hey, some people just feel uncomfortable taking a lesson. Perhaps Kent’s DVD is the next best thing.

We think this is one of the better DVD’s out there, of course, and it has its own little niche among the available offerings. As far as we know there isn’t another ski instruction DVD that purports to teach skiers by having them join an instructor clinic. That certainly makes it unique. And since Kent’s instructor clinics were voluntary and so well attended, we thought that would translate to a larger audience. We’re happy to say that our hunch appears to have been correct. People tell us the video really helps. And that’s music to our ears.

The DVD has lots of tools and exercises to help you improve your skiing for seasons to come. You can use it once a year, once a month, or even briefly every morning during your ski trip, just before heading out for first tracks.

But, every once in a while, after, say, 7 days of skiing, we’d recommend a refresher lesson with an instructor. We would, of course, suggest you choose your instructor carefully, making sure they are able to guide you towards the way you want to look. Taos does adhere to a particular look, founded on certain (mostly racing) principles, and obviously we prefer to teach customers that way. Almost everyone who comes for a lesson, comes for that look.

And everything on the videos is geared towards that.

What do you want your skiing to look and feel like? Do you want to be smooth and graceful on any terrain? The videos review skills and exercises that, once mastered, will bring your skiing to the next level. And there are tools and tips for all skier levels.

Once you see the videos, you’ll also have an idea about what professional skiers are thinking about and doing, particularly at Taos. You’ll learn lots of basic concepts that you can take to the slopes for experimentation. We even have an activity sheet (here online) that you can print up and bring along to review on the chair, either alone or with your friends. But you need the DVD for it to make sense.

Check out some of the clips we have here. They’re all in flash, and we plan to put more up. If that’s the way you want to look, then the DVD is likely for you.

Hopefully we’ll see you on the slopes soon!
